There are many correlations between learning to read and understand a language
and learning to "read" and understand art.

One reads a unit as a whole without separating it into smaller parts.

It is difficult to separate words from one another when you see the sentence as a whole.

It is difficult to separate the elements of art from one another when you see a piece of art.
When beginning, one does not start with something complex.

One starts to read one word at a time.

One starts to learn about art one element at a time.
After learning to recognize the symbols, one learns the ways in which they can be put together.

One learns the rules of grammar by which words are organized into sentences.

One learns the principles of design, rules which are guides that artists developed as they saw how people reacted to visual images.
