Harmony
by Shi Chun

Harmony in visual design means all divisions of the visual image relate to and go together each other with theme, for example, through organization of images, selection of monochromatic or comparable color, recurrence of related shapes or patterns and equality of space between objects. In harmonious picture, the elements are in agreement with one another and show particular similarity.

Harmony can be accomplished with two or more sub-principles such as unity and variety. Harmonious layouts create tranquility ambience. A layout can contain harmony of shape, tone, colour, and treatment.

  • Shape – type masses and illustration(s) conform to the shape of the design.

  • Tone - equalness of the weight of type faces, decoration and illustrations.

  • Colour – relationship of one colour to another.

  • Treatment – affiliation of typography design, ornament, or frame to the product or idea. (online resource “Typography & Page Layout ")

The American flag consists of two primary astral hues; red and blue, and one harmonious blending of all colors; white. Red is the physical phase for mentality, indicating health, vigor, friendship and love. Blue is the religious or spiritual phase. White transcends all other lights and signifies the perfect degree of spiritual attainment and development. Here the color White alleviates the conflict between the two primary colors and deliver perfect calmness. The American flag has perfect symbolic harmony underneath the design. Fifty states unite as on nation while each state keeps its own identity.

The texture of the stump and the rocks in this picture is rugged and feel rough to the touch. The main colour of the picture is Beige, which delivers calm, stress-reducing, earthy, natural, kind, non-assertive, and passive atmosphere. The off-white color of the top part of the stump gives little emphasis without agitating eyesight. The texture and color of objects in this picture deliver somewhat melancholy and bleak like late Fall but work together well.

The color of the coffee is dark-brown. The cup set is mingled colour of dark brown, light brown and dull yellow which is intellectual and spiritual and clear thinking. The colour of the coffee cream is vanilla. The colour of these three elements complements each other in accordance. Also the coffee cream diffuses and melts smoothly in coffee creates perfect harmony.

The white fountain water sprouts out from the light blue pond. The shape of motion of the each fountain water creates parabola and little froth line of water edge moves along with main body of the water in accord.

The two colour of the candy are orange and vanilla which are congruent to each other and clearly tells the taste (orange & vanilla) of the product (candy). The swirl or pinwheel pattern of the candy face implies that this candy must mellifluously melts on your tongue.

The analogous colour and the unified pattern of the wall create consistency and variety at the same time. Every horizontal, vertical, and diagonal line drawn on the wall and the pillar is straight but doesn't make any sharp angle or criss-cross. They seem running according to harmonious rule. The picture doesn't give constraint feeling even though there is no smooth lines or round patterns.

The sphere shape of the salt and the peppershaker have round holes on their top. The similar pattern of the sphere and round seems more cohesive and puts slight variety for their difference in number of the holes.

The white and black keys of music instrument imply imaginary or symbolic harmony. The color of the key contrasts each other but create beautiful sound if it plays with rules in music notes. They are co-workers.

The color of the each rock on the wall is different from each other but all of them are analogous; earth tone. The arrangement of the rocks is consistent horizontally and vertically. This well-balanced face of the wall supports the tile-roof. The colour of some of the rocks on the wall match to the colour of the tile creates harmony.

The material of the streetlight, bench, and the trashcan is iron. The light milk tone of the light bulb alleviates the shiny dark green of these three objects. Overall they seem harmonious with their natural background, which mainly consists of green color. The strip pattern of the bench and the trash can bring harmony, too.

The size of the spool in this thread organizer is same. Every thread is assorted according to its hue category. Many of these are saturated secondary, pastel color threads which are easily compatible each other.

The streetlight stands straight and open its arms to make the street bright and secure. The two arms draw like wings of a flying bird. The shape of the arms well matches to the sky. It feels soaring while the end of its arms slightly down to embrace the street.
