  Dimension by Mary Baxter

Dimension is an art element that makes a piece of artwork come alive. The art has a definition of realism, the look and feel of a width, height, and depth. This encompasses a spatial placement of objects that define dimension.
Dimension is really a myriad of art elements. Dimension includes the elements of depth, scale, proportion, perspective, width, height, space, form, light and shadow. All these elements bring this art to life.
Art could be multi-dimensional. The key is how the artwork is combined with multiple art elements to provide the desired result. The artist has many tools to help represent dimension. Among these are creating dimension with contrast of color and hue, a mixture of light and shadows.

This stack of CD jewel cases shows how light and shadow enhance the height and depth of the cases. Each stack clearly indicates the placement of objects in the foreground and are scaled to represent dimension - a combination of art elements.
This coke machine really caught my attention as showing the art element of dimension. The rows of bottles show many different art elements including scale, height, depth, and perspective. There is a certain depth that catches the eye. This depth is clear in the number of rows as well as the depth in each row.
When I drove down this street I was immediately drawn to the rows of trees on both sides of the street. These trees show dimension. There are a number of art elements involved. Mainly depth, height, width, space, and perspective.
As I was walking by this room, I could see the levels of depth, the proportion that is necessary to give us dimension. The tables and chairs get smaller the further away they are from you. The objects repeat allowing the element of perspective to provide the look of dimension.
The repeated pattern of the same type of bookshelf shows the dominant art elements of depth, perspective, and scale. Other elements such as light and shadow also help define dimension in this photo.

Examples of topic in online museum:

1. Name of piece of art: Abstract Composition
Artist: Joaquín Torres García
Museum: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
URL: http://www.mfah.org/collection.asp?par1=10&par2=&par3=75&par4=588&lgc=4&currentPage=1
This piece of art caught my attention with its scale, perspective, and depth. There is structure and a since of geometry in the design of this piece. The art work is clearly shows how light and shadows add to the element of dimension.

2. Name of piece of art: Saint Christopher Carrying the Christ Child through a Sinful World
Artist: Circle of Hieronymus Bosch
Museum: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
URL: http://www.mfah.org/collection.asp?par1=8&par2=&par3=34&par4=173&lgc=4&currentPage=1

This piece of art caught my attention with its use of color, light, and shadows that defines the spatial placement of the objects. The shades of color, perspective, and other art elements bring it all together to provide dimension.
