Class Eight Topics

Review Midterm Projects

For the midterm project, you were asked to put together a list of equipment that could be purchased for approximately $500 to put together a digital video kit that a student could check out from the lab. This kit would more than likely include a digital video camcorder, a microphone, a tripod, assorted cables, and any other items you feel should be included. For this assignment, you may find the Additional Resources listed above helpful as you research digital video equipment, as well as using web search engines and in-person visits to stores that sell this type of equipment.

When you have determined what items should go in the kit, please provide the following information for each item:

When you have completed the midterm assignment, please email the information to: brobin@uh.edu

Review Assignments from Class Seven

For the last assignment, you were asked to: create a short video on any topic of your choice, either related to your final semester project or on another topic. The completed video should be at least 60 seconds long and include at least 5 different video clips edited together. You may use video clips that you shot with a camcorder, downloaded from the web, created with a software program, in any combination.

We used Premiere Elements 7 in class and you may download a free 30-day trial version of this program for Windows at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/

Or if you prefer, you may use another video editing program to complete the assignment.

When you have completed the video, go to the course discussion blog at: http://cuin7346.blogspot.com/ and under Discussion Assignment Seven, post a comment in which you discuss your experience creating the video.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please upload your completed video to a location online where I can view it (such as Google Video, YouTube, Blogger, or other location) and include the URL in your post. Or, if this is not possible, please be sure to bring a copy of your video with you to the next class.

More Editing with Adobe Premiere Elements 7: Adding Titles, Transitions and Effects

Adding Titles

There are several ways to add titles in PE7, by creating a separate (or still) title or by superimposing a title over an existing video clip.

One way to add a title to a video project, is to click on the Title menu and select New Title and then Default Still.

This will bring up a text box over the video image.

You can change the font style, size, color and other attributes.

Another way to add a title, is to click on the Edit tab at the top right of the screen and then click the Titles button.

This will bring up a series of title slides that you can use with your own text.

You will notice that a pull-down menu reveals additional title slide categories.

Transitions

Transitions are used to add interest and variety as one video clip ends and another begins. PE7 has many transactions to choose from, although in educational video projects, in general, the most simple transitions are best.

Effects

Like transitions, effects are often used to add interest and variety to video clips. Many of the "Hollywood" type of special effects that PE7 includes may not be applicable for educational video projects; however some effects, such as Brightness & Contrast effect, that allows you to adjust the brightness of a video clip that is too dark, can be very helpful.

To use an effect, such as the Brightness & Contrast effect, click on Edit, then select Effects. Click one the Brightness & Contrast tab and drop it on top of the video clip in the timeline that you wish to adjust.

Right click on the video clip and then Show Properties.

This will bring up a series of image enhancement options that can be applied to the selected video clip. When you are satisfied with the result, click the Done button at the bottom right of the Effects panel.
